The Blog

“Drinking is really simple, but we insist on making it complicated.”

–With apologies to Confucius

This is a blog for people who appreciate alcohol.

No, I don’t mean the people who down shots one after another like it’s a relay race and whoever touches their liver to cirrhosis first wins – they’re not appreciating the alcohol, simply its effects. Similarly, I’m not referring to the folks who pride themselves on having a huge liquor cabinet (containing no bottle that cost less than $100) and a book full of drink recipes that no one’s ever heard of. If you used such a tame word as “appreciate” to describe their ardor, they might well laugh in your face.

This blog is for those of us who fall somewhere in the middle.  We’re interested in cocktails, but feel intimidated by the sheer range of ingredients, tools, techniques, and lingo involved in mixology.  We want to learn about drinks, but don’t want to memorize the history of the Sazerac.  We want to see the “wow” expression on our friends’ faces when we serve them, but don’t have the cash to drop on $80-a-bottle ingredients.  We may even want to learn what a jigger is, or how to muddle, but don’t like the idea of wading through eight pages of explanation on proper context or technique.

In short, this is a blog for those of us who like things…distilled.

  1. Having read this I thought it was rather informative.
I appreciate you finding the time and effort to
put this article together. I once again find myself spending way too much time both reading and commenting.
But so what, it was still worth it!
